[January 2009] China car sales report: MPV Sales

Although the JAC Refine MPV has seen its sales drop by 21%, its still selling over 2500 MPV’s per month, and its sales drop is nothing compared to the other manufacturers.

The drop in sales is due to the fact that businesses make up the biggest MPV makers, as Chinese families don’t have the need for big MPV’s. When business turns sour, so do MPV sales.

Geely to bid for Volvo

214 h=x geely logo Geely to bid for Volvo

China’s Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd is likely to submit a bid to acquire Ford’s Volvo brand in a bold attempt to expand internationally.

Geely is expected to submit a bid for the Swedish car maker as soon as next week, two people familiar with the situation said. There are at least three other possible bidders, one of which is also a Chinese company, according to one of the people.

Ford and Geely have been talking about Volvo for several weeks, the two people said. According to one of those individuals, Geely chairman Li Shufu met senior Ford executives in mid-January, around the time of the Detroit auto show, in Dearborn, Michigan Ford is based. Other representatives of the two companies have held separate talks in recent weeks, the person said.

Ford had no immediate comment, but a person close to the company acknowledged the Chinese company had been in talks with Ford for more than a year over a possible Volvo deal.

Wang Ziliang, a spokesman for Geely, declined to comment. In early February, Mr. Li, speaking through an assistant, denied a news report that his company was holding talks with Ford about buying Volvo.

Many analysts believe this could be the start of a wave of consolidation in the auto industry brought on by the economic crisis and the lowering of consumer demand due to tighter credit. In December, Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne predicted that only six major auto makers would survive globally.

Three European auto brands – General Motors’ Saab and Opel, and Ford’s Volvo – have effectively been put on the block in recent weeks as the U.S. auto giants try to cut costs and restructure.

A Geely bid for Volvo would be an unusual and risky move for a Chinese auto maker to take advantage of the global downturn and leap forward with its international ambitions.

Chinese companies have made a string of investments in natural resources, but so far have largely avoided buying major assets in other industries such as finance and manufacturing, despite often fire-sale prices.

Chinese auto companies have acquired foreign assets in the past – with mixed success – but never on Volvo’s scale. Last week, Chen Bin, a senior official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s main economic planning agency, publicly warned about the risks that acquiring a struggling foreign auto concern would pose for Chinese car makers.

“We need their technology, brands, talent and sales networks,” he said, referring to foreign car makers. But “it will be a very big challenge for Chinese companies to stabilise the operations of foreign auto makers and to maintain growth.”

If its planned bid is successful, Geely intends to maintain Volvo as an international brand, rather than turn it into a brand more focused on China, said one of the two people familiar with the matter. However, Geely might shift some of Volvo’s production to China to take advantage of China’s less-expensive labour and reap other benefits.

Geely has begun working with a U.S.-based consulting firm to put together a list of possible managers to run Volvo under Geely ownership, one of the two people said.

Last year, Volvo’s U.S. sales fell almost 32 per cent. It also saw declines in its market share in the U.S. and Europe. The Swedish brand posted a $US736 million operating loss in the fourth quarter. As part of its restructuring, Volvo trimmed one-fourth of its work force by the end of last year.

Ford earlier this year began asking companies that may want to bid for Volvo to identify themselves. The people familiar with the process said it has evolved far enough for Ford to accept offers that the company is ready to compare.

First Auto Works rolled off Besturn B50 yesterday

213 540xfloat=center faw besturn b50 hl First Auto Works rolled off Besturn B50 yesterday

The long-awaited Besturn B50 sedan model of FAW Car Co., a subsidiary of FAW Group, rolled off the production line in Changchun today. It is the second model of the FAW Besturn brand, after the 2009 Besturn B70. The Besturn B50 will go on sale by early May.

Last April, the Besturn B50 made its debut at the 2008 Beijing auto show. It is based on the previous generation Mazda6 platform, and equipped with a 1.6L gasoline engine with peak power of 76/6000 (kW/rpm), available with manual and automatic transmissions.

The Besturn B50 stands on a modified Mazda 6 chassis, as FAW and Mazda produce the Mazda 6 in their joint venture operation. A hybrid version of the Besturn B50 is expected to be available later.

Since FAW manufactures in China the Prius on behalf of Toyota, surely a hybrid engine will be a natural next step for FAW Group, who has seen Besturn as one of its own brands, like the HQ (Red Flag) brand.

The Besturn B50 will be delivered to the market in late April or early May this year, at a price between 110,000 yuan ($16,100) and 150,000 yuan.

Government push automakers to buy overseas rivals?

212 h=x volvo 3 Government push automakers to buy overseas rivals?

Chinese automakers has been warned by government many times to acquire assets from struggling overseas rivals, Shanghai Securities News reported on Monday.

“Chinese automakers are not strong enough to participate in cooperation with big global players, ” said Chen Bin, head of the industry co-ordination department of the National Development and Reform Commission of China.
The report added that Chinese automakers Geely, Changan, and Chery have been approached by many overseas rivals in recent months.

Chery said last month it would not rule out the possibility of buying a troubled European auto brand, while Changan and Dongfeng are expected to place indicative bids for Volvo Cars in April, according to Reuters.

For the design of Golf 6th, different people has different views, but most guys believe that the design concept “back to classic ” is very successful. Compare to the rounded shape of Golf 5th, Golf 6th appears to be more vigorous and powerful indeed.

And this time, the Golf 6th has no more changes in shape other than adds the words “FAW Volkswagen” in the buttocks.

09′ Shanghai auto show: Special, expected!

The Shanghai Auto Show is practically upon us, but whats worth seeing in these economically tight times? Will the manufacturers give us some interesting models to look at, or will they try to save their cash on models, or do away with eye candy altogether?
We’re not quite sure how far VW plan to push the Passat in China, they have approximately 500* over sedan models to push in the China market. The ‘new’ Passat will continue to use the 1.8T engine as used in countless other VAG sedans.

6th Generation VW Golf

139 h=x golf 6 09 Shanghai auto show: Special, expected!

The VW Golf will skip a few generations and launch in China with the 6th Gen. The Golf has been pushed from line to line in China and never actually quite found its footing in the market, it did find itself being sold as a Bora hatchback at one point. The 6th Generation Golf may find itself in a market where the consumers are now more open towards hatchback models, and should find itself ahead of the aging competition.

MG6
Quite possibly the most anticipated car of the show, and the car with the most secrecy about it. Possibly coming in both hatchback and sedan form in April to give the crowds a double whammy. SAIC are hardly known for their skills at keeping a car secret, but they’ve done extremely well at keeping the MG6 under wraps. Only one MG6 photo has made it to the net so far, but the naysayers say its a fake. Autoexpress ran with computer generated pictures of an MG6 hatchback, but until we see it in the flesh, the MG6 is still a mystery.

Skoda Superb
The Skoda brand was introduced into China rather late, but that has not stopped it or slowed it down any way shape or form. The Skoda brand has gone from strength to strength, and should continue with the soon to be launched Skoda Superb.

Dongfeng Feng Shen

137 h=x dongfeng aeolus 09 Shanghai auto show: Special, expected!
The Dongfeng Feng Shen is Dongfengs first proper attempt at making their own car, except it was designed by the same people who designed FAW’s Besturn, as you can see, the two could pass as twins.

BYD M6

25 h=x byd mpv m6 09 Shanghai auto show: Special, expected!
The BYD M6, like the MG6, is also shrouded in mystery. The M6 is expected to look a lot like the Toyota Previa (BYD has ‘taken’ many styling hints from Toyota over the past few years) but is not expected to go for Toyota Previa money, but rather a more practical 50,000rmb and rising. The M6 is also expected to come with an electric powertrain that will do over 400km on a single charge.

There are other cars being launched at the Shanghai Show, but the above are the ones that seem to be of real importance. The Besturn B50, and the domestically made Toyota RAV4 will be displaying their wares at the show. The Porsche Panarama is also expected to launch in Shanghai.

207 h=x 1logo renault French carmaker Renault to launch 14 new cars to China

On Feb 26, French carmaker Renault began to sell its imported new Laguna car in China and announced it will bring 14 new models to the Chinese market in the 2009-2011 period, by Xinhua.

The new Renault vehicle models to be imported to China will include SUV, MPV, sedan and RS models. Of the 14 new Renault models, the all-new Laguna went on sale in China last week, priced at 298,000 yuan ($43,630), and the new Koleos, Renault’s first crossover SUV model, will be imported to the Chinese market next month to compete with numerous city SUVs locally made in China. Its retail price may start from 242,000 yuan.

Starting with the new Laguna model, Renault has resumed its imports to the China market. The new Laguna buyer can get a three-year or 100,000km warranty like the buyer of an Infiniti model. Some all-new Laguna-derived models will also come to China, including the Laguna CC. The Renault MPV model Scenic being sold in China will be replaced by its revamped or upgraded version as well.

An early report said Renault was likely to restart its cooperation talks with China’s Dongfeng Motor Corp and, together with Dongfeng’s partner Nissan Motor, they would form a new three-way joint venture likely to build Renault cars for the Chinese market.
